James O’Flynn and his band Claddagh Rogues have battled their fair share of demons to consistently produce passionate music rooted in their troubled lives. Born out of Cork’s Simon Community, which cares for the homeless and those at risk, Claddagh Rogues have been going strong for nearly 10 years and released ‘For the Record’ on Saturday 14 January 2017.

James, spent most of his early life in prison, under psychiatric care and homeless on the streets of Cork. Fellow Claddagh Rogues founder member Mags Kelly experienced addiction and homelessness. ‘For the Record’ pays tribute to Mags, who passed away in 2014, aged just 44. Talking about the album, James said music continues to keep him on the straight and narrow: ‘Some tracks will pay special tribute to Mags, other will have a fresh meaning after her passing. I had no idea things would go this far. I’m the last original member of the Rogues. I have a house, a son and I want to be there for him as a father. I feel proud of myself and my family are happy too. They have been on the journey with me too. I have been a messer all my life. Things are looking up.’

Inspired by their love of music, Claddagh Rogues got off the streets, out of prison and into recording. ‘Journey’ was the Rogues’ first, six-track recording in 2008, described by singer Mags Kelly as ‘our story.’ In 2010, Claddagh Rogues recorded ‘Songs from D Block (& Other Life Stories)’ The album was produced by Louise McCormick and John Crone, who, between them, have previously worked with many renowned Irish recording artists including Davy Spillane, Tír na nÓg and U2.

James said: ‘A teacher told me if I didn’t get in trouble with the law to come and see him and I’d make millions with my voice. I love entertaining people. As a child I played with a biscuit tin drum, then I got a mouth organ. I have always had music in my life. When I was drinking, in solitary confinement in Cork prison and in hospital, I’d sing away to myself. That is how my life was and is with music. Our words and music help you understand your own and other people’s points of view, the big meanings in life and how you feel about things.’
